Make tourist destinations more traveler friendly – Government urge states

Union Tourism Secretary Sujit Banerjee this week wrote to all state chief secretary urged them to implement a set of guidelines to help them in designing and implementing tourism projects.

In his letter, Banerjee said that state officials need to hire architects, landscape architects and conservationists to tourist destinations more appealing aesthetically.

"The guidelines will provide instructions for the state to buildings and other amenities that will attract tourists and would also add to the beauty of the tourist destination," said the official was important for the Sabbath.

"Tourism is one of the most important aspects in achieving national integration," he added.

States were asked to permit a terminal for all tourism projects.

Banerjee said while the construction of urban public facilities, adequate attention should be paid to the design and aesthetics, material selection, durability and maintenance.

Beautification efforts should bear in mind the cleanliness too, ans state officials should install the litter bins and recycling bins on site.

Civic amenities better information, public toilets, parking and space for the disabled.


Banerjee said the guidelines were framed with the following recommendations at a workshop in New Delhi, 19th August on the development of world-class tourism infrastructure.


The letter also said the Government should encourage the free and often distribute high-quality tourist maps, guide books, CDs, posters and tourism calendar.

Wayside amenities should be located after approximately every 50 km on the road leading to tourist destinations.

"States should also make an effort to upgrade and strengthen existing tourism facilities in the tourism policy from its own resources," he said.

The letter asks the state to come out with a comprehensive conservation plan for attracting foreign and domestic tourists.

He has directed the states to face drought-like situation should be avoided fountains and other water-based elements in the tourist areas.

Banerjee also asked states to set up hospitality institute to generate employment in the states
